West Sussex County

Heat-related deaths: As temperatures increase across the UK, winters will become wetter and warmer, including more frequent and extreme heatwaves, which lead to an increase in heat-related deaths, particularly in the elderly.

  • How Does This Impact Me? Summer in the UK will be 1-6°C hotter by 2070, and heat waves are now 30% more likely

Intense flooding & rainfall will occur more frequently in the coming years

  • How Does This Impact Me? Since 1998, the UK has seen 6 of the 10 wettest years on record. On February 29, 2024, Sussex experienced 205mm of rain in a short amount of time, which became one of the worst flash floods in the decade

Greater coastal erosion due to increased flooding

  • How Does This Impact Me? There is less land available for residential and agricultural use, which would then significantly increase the price of food and homes

Case Study: Medmerry Coastline

West Sussex is a ceremonial county located in South East of England. It has extensive coastal areas, as well as many ridges of chalk hills and cliffs. A large portion of its land is rural. The Medmerry coastline is located there, and it has been facing issues with coastal flooding, which has now become a risk for the nearby towns of Selsey and Pagham. There have been some coastal defenses installed; however, they are unsustainable. In 2008, a breach in the shingle bank had already caused damage of £5 million.

Why are coasts important?

  • Support a range of human activities e.g. tourism, transportation, and fisheries

  • Constantly changing due to deposition or erosion made by waves, making them essential habitats that are able to support many marine plants, animals, and insects

Environmental Problem:

  • Soil & bank erosion

    • Landslides as soil becomes less compact and less held together

    • Water quality decreases as it carries sediment from collapsed cliffs/ banks

  • Destruction of coastal habitats

    • affects habitats of many flora and fauna â€‹

  • Coastal erosion

    • Loss of land, especially to collapsing cliffs

    • Homeowners lose property and many lose their homes

How do climate-change-induced problems impact me?

  • Potential threats of saltwater intrusion, which decreases the availability and quality of drinking water

  • Loss of land & property

  • Water sports you enjoy may no longer be allowed as the recreation value of the coast decreases

Solutions!!

The Medmerry Realignment Scheme

  • Largest soft engineering flood defence project

  • sustainable flood risk management where intertidal habitats, e.g. mudflats, saltmarshes, and transitional grassland are created

  • construction began in October 2011 and finished at late

What Can I Do?

  • Reduce your carbon pollution by conserving energy and using public transportation - this would help slow down climate change, stopping the exacerbation of coastal flooding and sea level rises

  • Support sustainable land-use practices which protect coastal environments and reduce vulnerability to flooding
